Time in Automated Legal Reasoning

چکیده
Despite the ubiquity of time and temporal references in legal texts, their formal-ization has often been either disregarded or addressed in an ad hoc manner. In this paper we address this issue from the standpoint of the research done on temporal representation and reasoning in AI. We identify the temporal requirements of legal domains and propose a temporal representation framework for legal reasoning which is independent of (i) the underlying representation language and (ii) the speciic legal reasoning application. The approach is currently being used in a rule-based language for an application in commercial law.

Automated Deduction for Deontic Logics: Laying the Foundations of Legal Expert Systems
ABSTRACT: Deontic logic can be used to formalise legal rules. The automation of reasoning in deontic logic can therefore be used as the basis of a legal expert system. In this paper we investigate the automation of deontic logic using tableau calculi for modal logics. The correspondance between the deontic and modal logics is outlined and the tableau for the modal logics used in the prover are ...
متن کاملBridging the gap between Legal Practitioners and Knowledge Engineers using semi-formal KR
The use of Structured English as a computation independent knowledge representation format for non-technical users in business rules representation has been proposed in OMG’s Semantics and Business Vocabulary Representation (SBVR). In the legal domain we face a similar problem. Formal representation languages, such as OASIS’ LegalRuleML and legal ontologies (LKIF, legal OWL2 ontologies etc.) su...
متن کاملAutomated Legal Assessment with OWL2
In this paper we describe the heart of HARNESS, a legal knowledge system that is developed in the ESTRELLA project. This heart consists of a reasoning engine that performs legal assessment tasks, i.e. determining whether some case violates and/or complies with legal norms. This assessment module uses three knowledge bases cast in OWL 2: a domain ontology, a set of norms and a case description. ...
متن کاملAutomated Reasoning for Robot Ethics
Deontic logic is a very well researched branch of mathematical logic and philosophy. Various kinds of deontic logics are considered for different application domains like argumentation theory, legal reasoning, and acts in multi-agent systems. In this paper, we show how standard deontic logic can be used to model ethical codes for multi-agent systems. Furthermore we show how Hyper, a high perfor...
متن کاملA Framework for Open Mechanized Legal Reasoning
We build on the analogy between theorem proving and legal reasoning. In the former case it was shown that mechanized reasoning is always achieved provided there is a theory, a control on this theory and some rules governing this controlled theory once introduced in a given environment. We show that it is possible to identify similar conditions for cognitive systems and also in the legal world. ...
